Browser hijacking programs promote fake search engines by changing certain browser settings. Note that it is possible that the developers distribute this app with other PUAs. For example, browser hijackers and/or adware-type apps. It is unknown whether Mac Cleaner performs a fake scan or provides any valid functions, however, there is a strong possibility that this is rogue software. Their main purpose is to trick users into believing that there are actions that can be taken (in this case, to improve computer performance) using their features so that users pay for activation/registration of their bogus software. Apps that perform fake scans do not improve computer performance, fix any issues, remove files, etc. These PUAs provide fake results and detect fake issues. I.e., the free version allows scanning of systems, but not to perform any further actions. To remove any detected files (or other data), however, users must activate Mac Cleaner by paying for its full version. Mac Cleaner has features that allow users to scan their Mac computer for large and old files, duplicates, privacy data, and installed programs, and then to remove them. Users often download and install these apps onto their computers inadvertently and, therefore, they are categorized as potentially unwanted applications (PUAs). In fact, this app is distributed using dubious methods. Mac Cleaner is designed to clean, protect and optimize Mac computers by removing junk, duplicate files, and uninstalling unwanted, redundant apps, etc.
